PGs for Induction of Midtrimester Abortion

Abstract
Prostaglandins (PG) were used for the induction of midtrimester abortion in 43 patients, divided into 3 groups.
Group A consisted of 18 patients who were induced by intraamniotic administration of PGF2.. Group B numbered 15 women who received PGF2¡ì in the extraovular space by a Foley catheter introduced through the cervix. Group C totaled 10 patients treated with PGE2 vaginal suppositories.
Abortion occurred in 95. 5% of group A, 86. 6% in group B and 100% of group C. It was complete in 72% of group A, 54% of group B and 70% of group C. Induction-abortion interval averaged 23. 7, 35. 8 and 36. 2 hours respectively in group A, B, and C.
The most common side effect consisted of gastrointestinal(GI) symptoms such as nausea, vomitting and diarrhea (55% of all cases). Group B showed the highest incidence of GI symptoms (66%). Diarrhea was observed in 50% of cases treated with PGE2 (group C).
Other side effects included occasional transient hypotension and pyrexia in group C and hypertension in group A and B.
These results indicate that when amniocentesis is possible intra-amniotic administration of PGF2 presents the safest and most efficient method of termination of pregnancy during the second trimester. Extra-ovular and intra-vaginal route of administration should be reserved for those patients in whom amniocentesis is either impractical or has failed.
